And let me tell you this, when you fire them, what you are hoping for them, they can find a place they want to be for a company they want to work for. So you call up your mom because obviously shes sympathetic, or your dad if hes the more sympathetic one, and you talk about the injustice of the universe, about how youre kicking everyones ass in practice, even though thats absolutely not true, because youre looking at the data every single day after practice on the bulletin board and youre ranked in the bottom 5% of the team, and all this sort of stuff is telling you youre not working that hard. So, you know, we had this insipid, you know, core value about working hard, but theres nothing motivational about this core value of working hard because that inspires no one. If its the two bigs against two other bigs, theyre having a little two V two competition underneath the basket. Yes. Every now and again Ill work with these different groups that are sorting out a way to test character, and theres some group Im working with, but right now I cant remember them, although I am doing some work with Angela Duckworth on performance. And she was telling a great story, and she said when she was at Columbia they just hired a Russian exile poet by the name of Joseph Brodsky. So are the four V four and five V five, everything is recorded in this practice and I am just stunned watching this. I am never going to make this travel roster unless I change. And now all of a sudden theyre going to become responsible for everything. Anson: And whats written here is, Now is the period to escape the protection of loving parents. We dont want you to get hurt, so right now even in that line I am addressing the narrative. Then he shifted the next slide, to 2012, the year we were in. And then he patiently waits for, you know, this self-righteous CEO to finish and then he basically calmly says, well, if youd taken that energy that you invested in your bottom performer and you invested that in your top performers, your bottom line would be better. But if we started having all of these, you know, kids take the, you know, Angela Duckworth grit test or, you know, some sort of, you know, psychological profile or take my core value test, wed lose them, and the word would get out that, you know, thats how were evaluating them, and it would kill us. In fact some are made so clear that on the first day of practice this August, theres some players that arent going to be practicing with us because they failed the initial test to get them into training, which is a beat test which measures their cardiovascular efficiency. At the end of that exercise or drill or game or race or this or that, or the other thing, everyone is ranked. We had sort of a vague idea that in order to be effective you had to be great 1 v. 1, so we have 5 different 1-on-1 ladders. I assume thats where you probably look at a lot of this data. I was one of the warm-up bands along with Stephen Covey and Hyrum Smith. When I was this young coach came up to me one day and said, Anson, if youre bored one afternoon, please let us know. What you have to recruit and who you have to hire is character. Many of the values are drawn from books on leadership, and they are illustrated by a diverse set of symbols and quotations. And now we bring in our own university people. And I know that thats something in the corporate world thats been a really hot topic lately, are performance reviews and giving people real time performance feedback. Everything you read in his book is absolutely true. Ive never developed a leader. Because theyve been filled with absolute garbage from their parents and often from their youth coaches. And honestly, I knew that what you had to do with them, like your culture, wants to get people to do extraordinary things, to live the culture. So basically thats the construction of our player conference, which takes me out of the subjective mode. If I have a 30 player roster at the end of every night, I have three analytics boys that are getting degrees in statistics here, convert that days practice into data and theyre ranked, theyre ranked from one to 30. But right now for us its hit or miss. We are the most elite students in the United States in this area and now hes assigning us work to do that elementary school students are done in the United States. Heres whats happening right now, and were seeing it. And what he was telling us is who we are trying to recruit, and who we are trying to train right now. Anson: Okay. But the real star of the show was Jack Welch. And they brought Brodsky in and Brodsky sat down all of his PhD candidates and masters candidates in Russian literature and assigned them all of this Russian literature and poetry to memorize. I think that team won the national championship. Now obviously I need verbal leaders. Anson Dorrance has led the UNC Tar Heels to win a mind-blowing 22 of the 38 national championships that have been decided in the history of collegiate women's soccer. Anson: It was all trial and error. And youll appreciate this because youre a woman. I mean, I thought I could play for anyone. And so thats where we are right now. I guess on the other hand not so surprising when you think about all of the newspaper headlines these days dealing with corporate bad behavior. And heres what she tells me. So theyre not allowed to touch coachability. And I loved having that year on it because that was the year I graduated from high school. Here is the first principle. Almost every single time he would tell everyone in the room to fire the bottom 10% of their workforce. One of the greatest compliments Ive ever been given by any player Ive ever coached was a kid of mine that was playing in the pro leagues. Its not a sort of thing you can lead through a memorandum. This kid is coming home from school. [Laughs.]. They have to get a sense of their relationship with you that you appreciate the fact they are different.
